Other Common Terminology

There are lots of terms used in ultrasonics that you will often hear in conversations on the subject.

Gates: A gate is a tool used by a gauge to define a time period in which to search for an echo. The beginning and end of the gate tells a gauge when to start and stop looking for the signal. A gate is required to achieve a thickness measurement.

Gain: The gain is the level of amplification of the transmitted and echo signal received by the gauge. This can be adjusted to enable the gauge to detect an echo. It is often compared to the volume control.

Threshold: The threshold is the level at which a gauge detects an echo. Adjusting the threshold is the same as adjusting the sensitivity of the gauge.
